The Ten Minute Topo

Part 1 - Hovermap Handheld Scanning

Cottage

If you have ever been tasked with completing a topographic survey under dense canopy, you will know that this can pose a challenge for GPS.  Each measurement through tree cover can take time to achieve a solution.  Getting accurate building shots under eaves is nearly impossible.

Total station surveys are limited by line of sight for each setup, as are terrestrial 3D scans.  In much of Ontario, rugged, rocky surfaces are difficult to adequately measure using sparse GPS or total station survey points. Rural or distant sites require time consuming revisits should details be missed in the field.

Classify & Interpret

Point clouds can be filtered to produce a bare-earth model of the site, stripping the vegetation, structures and equipment.  Unlike photogrammetry that requires lengthy post-processing, the scans can be exported immediately after capture for QA/QC, classification, and interpretation.

The resulting point cloud is accurate to within a few centimeters.  The density of the measurements is controlled by the speed the unit travels.   The Hovermap scanner offers excellent capture around and between trees. The scan can always be georeferenced, if required, by adding targets at known site control points.

Digitize & Measure

Rapid 3D SLAM Scans

Attach to any CAD drawing to produce accurate  slopes, contours, heights, distances, areas and volumes. The detailed scan shows buildings, fences, powerlines, retaining walls, paved and gravel surfaces.  Add to any CAD drawing to digitize features for the site plan.

Document significant trees for architectural and environmental design and accomodation.

Extract elevations and measurements of structures or terrain and create a 3D model to help you understand your study area quickly and in great detail.

As-Built Plans

The Hovermap mobile laser scanner can provide a point cloud for your CAD system, to support all of your site plans, environmental documentation or architectural designs.

Erosion Control

Create detailed cross sections and profiles of roadways, bedrock, parking lots, and drainage features.  Visualize and measure areas of erosion and deposition.

GPS Denied Navigation and Mapping

The Hovermap system by emesent, either mounted on a drone or carried in hand is a great force multiplier allowing one person to collect more data in a matter of minutes than a crew could in a day.  When you consider that you can scan 3 or 4 surveyed targets and then continue in and out of GPS denied environments, export the the point cloud to a USB and analyse it on a laptop in the field in a matter of minutes it becomes clear that integrating such a versatile Lidar system into your workflow will be transformative to any activity.

Capture all of the detail of structures, equipment, and vegetation in a simple walk about the property, in just a few minutes.  No GPS signal is required.  The Hovermap scanner uses advanced SLAM algorithms to accurately build a point cloud of the site.  Simply start the scanner, and walk.

A mobile scanner allows the entire site to be collected in a single point cloud.  No registration of multiple fixed setups is required.  There are fewer occlusions due to the mobile point of view.  These data were collected over a  brief 8 minute survey of the property by one person on foot.
